Dear Patients,

Welcome to the New Mills Surgery Newsletter.

Urgent Care Centre

We are very pleased to announce the arrival of our new Urgent Care Centre. The doors opened on 2nd October after a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

Why an Urgent Care Centre?

We have worked very closely with Goyt Valley Medical Practice and Thornbrook Surgery have listened to your comments.

A common theme is that patients feel the out of hours service is poor.

We took this one-step further and began to look at the number of patients who had attended Accident & Emergency with minor complaints that could be treated locally.

Did you know that to attend A&E costs the Primary Care Trust £80.00 before you have any treatment? If you stay more than 4 hours, this can cost as much as £2000.

We realised that the vast majority of these conditions could have been seen at an Urgent Care Centre.

Because of this, Sett Valley, Goyt Valley and Thornbrook practices started a project 2 years ago resulting in the development of an Urgent Care Centre for the North High Peak.

Location:

Perhaps you are wondering why this service has been based in Goyt Valley’s Practice. This decision was taken after discussions with the ambulance service as Goyt Valley is the mid point for all the surgeries involved and is close to the A6, this makes it easier for access.

Patient Pathway:

You will be assessed by experienced Nurse Practitioners and receive treatment for a variety of conditions such as:

  • Injuries such as
    • Cuts & suturing
    • Bruises
    • Minor Burns/Scalds
    • Risk Of Tetanus
    • Minor Head Injuries
    • Muscle and joint injuries (sprains / back pain / tendonitis)
  • Illnesses such as
    • Ears, Nose, Throat & Chest Conditions
    • Skin Complaints (Rashes, allergic reactions, scabies)
    • Stomach Pains
    • Urinary Problems
    • Eye Conditions
    • Headaches & Dizziness
    • Emergency Contraception

The centre is complimentary to the GP surgery and we ask patients to continue to use the surgery as they would do under normal circumstances. The Urgent Care Centre is for problems that occur when the surgery is closed and you need to be seen before the surgery re-opens.

Contacting the Urgent Care Centre:

If you need to contact the Urgent Care Centre when the surgery is closed. Please ring the surgery number and your call will automatically be diverted.

Flu Clinics:

As you will be aware there is delay in the supply of flu vaccinations. Due to this we have had to arrange our Flu Clinic’s differently. Please make an appointment if you have one of the following:

  • Diabetes
  • COPD
  • Asthma
  • Heart Disease

Other patients who require an injection will be able to book an appointment from the beginning of November. Any queries, please ask at reception.

Patient Participation Group:

If you would like to join the Patient Participation Group please contact the editor (Lynne Woodward on 01663 743523) with comments on the newsletter or suggestions regarding content and we will do our best to address the issues.

Commuter Surgeries:

The commuter surgeries have proved to be a great success. These surgeries are strictly for people who work and find it difficult to attend the practice during the day. The surgery is open on a Wednesday from 7.30am to 8.00pm.

Community Matron:

The practice is very pleased to welcome Fiona Roscoe who is our new Community Matron. Some patients may already know Fiona as she previously worked in the District Nurse Team. Her role is to work with patients with long-term illness and offer them support. As this is a new post the role will continually be developing and we will keep you informed.

Private Clinics:

Sett Valley wanted to provide other services locally for our patients and those in the surrounding area.

On a Wednesday evening we now have a number of private clinics that are proving to be successful.

On offer we have:

Hypnotherapy:

This can aid smoking cessation, or weight loss, phobias and many other things.

Permanent Hair Removal:

This is very successful for men and ladies especially with dark hair.

Non-Surgical Treatment for Lines & Wrinkles:

Clients who have had this treatment have been pleased with the results and have achieved the desired appearance they wanted.

[NEW] Counselling for Couples:

This is for clients having relationship problems and is provided by a fully qualified Relate counsellor.

If you would like more information about any of these services please contact Corrine at the surgery on 01663-743483.

Internet:

For Patients who like to use the internet you can now order your Repeat Prescriptions. Patients who are interested in using this service must contact either Sandra or Corrine at the practice. Patients will be given their own I.D and the EMIS ACCESS web address that will enable you to submit your prescription. This service is still in its infancy but we hope that this will provide patients with an alternative.

Note from the Practice Manager:

Dear Patients,

As many of you are aware Dr Williams is currently off sick. He has undergone a small operation and is recovering very well. We look forward to him returning to work in the near future and send him our very best wishes.

I am very sad to say that over the past few weeks some of the reception staff have suffered some terrible verbal abuse and rudeness from patients either at the reception desk or on the phone. There is absolutely no need for this kind of behaviour and I would ask patients to treat the staff here at Sett Valley in the same way they want to be treated. I am very lucky to have such an excellent supportive team who sometimes work under a great deal of stress that patients don’t realise. If you have a problem, then please feel free to either contact myself or the Assistant Practice Manager (Sandra Oldale) but please don’t take out you anger and frustrations on the reception staff.

Yours faithfully
Angela Wales, Practice Manager

New Staff:

We would like to welcome Dr Ward who has joined the practice until next August. We hope that Emma will be very happy and enjoy her time with us.

We would also like to welcome as a permanent GP to the practice Dr Alan Egan. Dr Egan completed his GP registrar year with us and is now employed by the practice for 2 days a week.

HealthCare Assistant:

Jackie Palmer has now returned to work following her maternity leave. Welcome back to her.

New Reception Staff:

Jill Robinson, Susan Dowell and Sara Johnston have joined the practice. We hope that they will be happy with us.
